In 2015, ANC embarked on the restoration of the Tanner Amphitheater in partnership with the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Training Center. After three years of forensic analysis of the materials and finishes, a thorough condition assessment, and design development, staff and guests finally saw physical work begin last summer. This Spring, the amphitheater has reopened for visitors to enjoy. The preservation effort assures the amphitheater, built in 1873, remains as originally designed and built for the next 150 years. A bugler from The U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own”, plays "Taps" as part of military funeral honors for U.S. Army Sgt. Carl Mann in Section 59 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, June 6, 2019. June 6 marked the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion on the beaches of Normandy where more than 165,000 Allied troops landed along the French coastline to fight Nazi Germany. Mann was among those Allied troops and during his Army career, earned three Purple Hearts and seven Bronze Stars. More than 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded on D-Day but Mann survived and lived to be 96 before passing on March 30, 2019. Mann’s eldest son, Carl W. Mann II, received the flag from his father’s casket. (U.S. Army photo by Elizabeth Fraser / Arlington National Cemetery / released)

**ROAD CLOSURE** To support renovation of the heating and air conditioning system at the Women in Military Service to America Memorial, a portion of Schley Drive (the road North of Memorial Avenue) will be closed today June 8, and on June 22, and July 13. The closure is needed to allow space for a large crane to support the work and reach equipment located behind the memorial. We apologize for the inconvenience as these historic facilities get maintained and improved. If you have a family pass, please check with staff at the gate as you enter who can provide alternate route information if needed. Pedestrian routes should not be impacted.

100 years ago today, Congress passed the 19th Amendment and finally gave all American women the right to vote. Suffrage leader Anna Kelton Wiley, a founder of the National Women’s Party and one of the many heroines who made the passage of the 19th Amendment possible, is buried at ANC in Section 13. #HonorThem (Portrait from the Library of Congress. Earlier today, sailors from the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard and a trumpeter from the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Band conducted military funeral honors for U.S. Navy Reserve Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class William Blancheri in Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery. From the Defense POW / MIA Accounting Agency: In November 1943, Blancheri was a member of Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, which landed against stiff Japanese resistance on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll of the Gilbert Islands, in an attempt to secure the island. Over several days of intense fighting at Tarawa, approximately 1,000 Marines and Sailors were killed and more than 2,000 were wounded, but the Japanese were virtually annihilated. Blancheri died at the age of 19 on the first day of the battle, Nov. 20, 1943, during the first waves of the assault. The battle of Tarawa was a significant victory for the U.S. military because the Gilbert Islands provided the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet a platform from which to launch assaults on the Marshall and Caroline Islands to advance their Central Pacific Campaign against Japan. In the immediate aftermath of the fighting on Tarawa, U.S. service members who died in the battle were buried in a number of battlefield cemeteries on the island. Blancheri was reportedly buried in Cemetery #26. The 604th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company conducted remains recovery operations on Betio between 1946 and 1947, but Blancheri’s remains were not identified. All of the remains found on Tarawa were sent to the Schofield Barracks Central Identification Laboratory for identification in 1947. By 1949, the remains that had not been identified were interred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (NMCP) in Honolulu. On Dec. 5, 2016, DPAA disinterred Tarawa Unknown X-016 from the NMCP, and sent the remains to the laboratory. To identify Blancheri’s remains, scientists from DPAA and the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial (mtDNA) DNA analysis, dental, anthropological and chest radiograph comparison analysis, as well as circumstantial and material evidence. Blancheri’s niece, Ann Dunn, received the flag from his casket.

Summer is here and, for us in the Greater D.C. area, that means heat, humidity, and thunderstorms. As you arrange your visit to Arlington National Cemetery this summer, plan to bring a water bottle to say hydrated and appropriate footwear, as the marble in the cemetery becomes slippery when wet. Download our ANC Explorer app to receive push notifications when thunderstorms are expected or changes to our hours of operations are made during severe weather. We want everyone to be safe and informed during their visit.
